TV & movie mewsings, with her review
of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters!
Mary Nyan:
Hai! Many years ago I wished for a spin-off series starring Megumi Odaka as Miki Saegusa of the Hesei-era Godzilla movies of the 90’s. Such a spin-off never happened, but purrhaps the closest thing to that is this TV series in the Monsterverse series of Godzilla and King Kong movies.
Although the Monsterverse movies have their share of good FX, thrilling action, lavish spectacle and fun moments, they seem too rushed, short, and silly, with too many incredulous plot holes and human characters that are not very smart, but this
10 epurrsode TV series is much supurrior and remedies those purroblems.
In addition to several appurrances by Godzilla there are several other Titans depicted with excellent visual FX, but at the heart of the tale are the human characters who are brilliantly purrtrayed. Created & purrduced by Chris Black (whose epurrsodes of Despurrae Housewives, Star Trek: Enterprise, Sliders and Xena I enjioyed) and and Matt Fraction (whose Iron Fist, Hawkeye and Iron Man comics I was purrticularly fond of, Monarch has the great plot, character developments, world-building purrduction values, cinematography, editing, international locations and mewsic at the unrushed pace!
It follows three generations of human characters across several decades and their connection with the Monarch Group that studies the monsters, which they call Titans with more discoveries about their origin, the science, conspurracies, politics and aftermath of dealing with them. The tale occurs mostly in 2015 and in the flashbacks to the 1950’s & 60’s, with some bits in 2982, 2012 & 2017. The series also reminds me the bit of Stranger Things, in that the young survivors of the disasters and conspurracies investigate the incidents amidst the family and career drama.The mane cast circa 2015 includes
Anna Sawai as Cate, Ren Watabe as her half-brother Kentaro, Kiersey Clemons as their friend May, Kurt Russell as Army Col. Shaw, Joe Tippett and Elisa Lasowsk as Monarch employees Tim and Duvall. The mane cast circa the 50’s & 60’s includes Mari Yamamoto and Anders Holm as scientists Keiko and Bill, and the casting coup Kurt Russelle’s son Wyatt Russell as the younger Shaw! I will give Monarch: Legacy of Monsters the high purraise, and I am curious as to how it might interact with the forthcoming movie Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire! Oh just call me Ilyana-chanI Compurred to the many big blockbuster movies of 2023, this’un caught me by surpurrise because I had not heard much about it, and I was not familiar with director i Yorgos Lanthimos’ sworks, but when I saw the purreviews I was quite intrigued, purrticularly by the great cast which includes Emma Stone, Willem Dafoe, Mark Ruffalo, and Ramy Youssef! it is a surrealistic slice of life / coming of age romantic comedy film of the Victorian steampunk genre, and Frankenstein themes, brimming with the dry macabre humor and intense sexuality aplenty, spurrnkled with ample harsh language amidst the beautiful sets and locations!
It is quite bittersweet and not for the widdle kitties as the terribly scarred Dr. Godwin (Dafoe) who resurrects the victim Bella (Stone) as a surrogate daughter in his mansion, wherein her rapid maturing and yearning for independence is observed by the assistant Max (Ramy), but she is lured away by the seductive barrister Duncan (Ruffalo) for the worldly adventures, as she encounters the diverse sides of… ah, well, I should not further spoil the taste of the plot! I will just add that I think that it is Emma Stones’ best movie, and it is one of my favorite movies of last year, and I hope for the DVD release! Nyow her is Mie-sensei to tell us about the

I love the Harry Potter books and movies, and I was glad that the Harry Potter Movie Concert Series came to the lovely 15 year old Durham Performing Arts Center last month! A bunch of us caravanned to the mainland city of Durham, NC which is about 170 miles northwest of here. Of course we could have telepurrtled there much quicker, but we enjoy the scenic road trip with favorite places to shop & dine along the way!The weather there was nippier and rainier than it is here, but we got there without incident.
We had the delicious supper at Nana’s restaurant next door to the DPAC before the movie concert started. I particularly liked the charred broccoli & cauliflower, the pureed potatoes, the sauteed green beans & onions, the butternut squash risotto, and the chocolate brownie! Next time I will have to try their creme brulee, fur shur!The DPAC ambience was so neat with all the enthused, positive vibes of the audience of all ages, genders, orientations & ethnicities, many in Hogwarts uniforms or other wizarding wear!
So like, the bustling ambience of the DPAC was so festive, and the the staff were totally kind and helpful. We had totally awesome seats on Row A near the center of the balcony! Prior to the start of the subtitled 2002 movie on the 40’ high definition wide screen was the short documentary of John Williams composing & conducting the film score. The musicians of the symphony orchestra took their seats on the stage under the screen, and the cordial conductor encouraged us to cheer for our favorite characters!
There was a 20 minute intermission, and after three totally awesome hours the event concluded with the rousing applause! It was so much fun to see Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in the theatre again, with the totally awesome sound of the movie and the orchestra and the genki crowd I hope that the DPAC will eventually screen the sequels! Expurrtly edited by Edd Vick, it is compurrised of comics, purrose, essays, articles, discussions, editorials, comics, illustrations, photos, and meowmbership information.To commeowmerate its 40th anniversary, the beautiful diverse issue #160 is consists of the two 8.5×11” stapled sections totaling 254 pages, 52 of which are in full color!

Our friend TonomuraBix’s https://linktr.ee/tonomurabix character Zel Mavet is the impurrial supurr assassin whose life is often brimming with drama and danger, but in these pics of her she is relaxing serenely in our island’s soothing moonlit Sakura Bath, which is the hot spurring of the mild tempurrature under the cherry trees. On the left she is wearing the short towel, and on the right she is wearing the micro bikini.
The Catsoka Nyano pic is Mike’s lates fan art of Star Wars’ Jedi meowster Ahsoka Tano, who was voiced by Ashley Eckstein in the animated series and purrtrayed by Rosario Dawson in the live-action series. In this catgirl version, she purrowling upon the rock formations under the moons of Lothal. For these Zel and catsoka pics, Mike penciled and inked the drawings, scanned them into the Mac computer, and digitally colored them with Photoshop and the mouse.
